Making Job Fairs Work For You
Some of the staff members were recently at a job fair.  There were many companies present with their representatives.  The companies had a lot of "goodies" to give away to the job fair attendees and to the other companies.  There were many people talking to all these company representatives about possible job openings.  The attendees seemed very excited as we walked around the job fair.

I wondered how many of these people were going to be hired by these companies yet alone interviewed.  From my years of recruiting experience, I have attended many job fairs as a company representative.  I have talked to hundreds if not thousands of candidates at these fairs.  In my experience, the companies that I have worked for as a recruiter rarely hired people from these job fairs.  I'm not sure what the reasons are, but I have a few ideas why.

The companies might not have any openings.  You might be thinking then why are they here at the job fair? A lot of companies attend these job fairs because they are a great place for them to be seen.  It provides cheap advertising for the companies and good community relations.  They might not be hiring now, but in three or six months they will be hiring.

Also, the company representatives receive so many resumes at these job fairs.  The recruiters never get a chance to review them.  Companies receive so many resumes electronically, the recruiters just file the paper applications away.

Here are our tips for making job fairs work for you:

  • Make sure you dress like you were going on an interview
  • Have many copies of your cover letter and resume
  • Talk to as many company representatives as you can (have an idea of what the company does)
  • Ask the company representatives for their business card
  • Go to the company's website and apply for the positions you are intereested in
  • Follow-up with the company three to five days after the job fair (Phone call or hand written thank you note)

If you follow these tips, you will be "standing out from the crowd" and using job fairs as another source for finding a job.

Thanks,

SCR

Employment outlook improving?
It seems that things are starting to slowly turn around in the economy.  We have noticed that new job openings are slowly starting to hit the jobs boards.  The good thing is that companies are starting to hire again.  Unfortunately, it is going to be very competitive to get these jobs.  We have noticed that companies are asking more of employees and not paying them what they should be making.

People wonder why they are not getting calls from companies or why they never make it to the next round of interviews.  Securing a job is not an easy task.  You have to make sure that your resume and cover letter are up to date.  Also, make sure that your resume truly hightlights your talents.  Once the resume is complete, you must practice your interviewing techniques.  You can have mock interviews or go on interviews for positions that you may not really want.

Practice will definitely help you.  Remember to remain positive.  If you need help, Steel City Resumes is here for you!
